Yesterday I headed to Santa Ana with Lauren for a protest. As a founding member of the National Lawyers Guild, Orange County Chapter, part of her duty is to observe protests and report police misconduct similar to what happened on May 1, 2007. She asked me to go with her and take some photos.
The protesters: A group of 11 students, each formally charged with a felony count of conspiracy for practicing non-violent free speech during a presentation at UCI by the Israeli Ambassador, Michael Oren.
Fortunately the protest was peaceful. In closing, the students presented another formal letter to Orange County District Attorney, Tony Rackauckas, demanding the charges be dropped. This kind of prosecution is unheard of in situations where politicians have been heckled (or even kicked off stage) in settings similar to the one at UCI. These students not only face the felony charge, but eight are facing possible expulsion from UCI and three from UCR.
